Spinal Health

Your Spine

The spine, or “back bone”, is designed for two essential functions: to protect and house your delicate spinal cord and nerves, and also to provide you with the ability to bend, twist, and move.

Your spine consists of 24 moveable bones, with soft discs in between that give us our flexibility. Our spine has three sections: cervical (neck), thoracic (mid back), and lumbar (low back). Each spinal section has a normal curve. These act as “shock absorbers” to protect us from the impact of our movements such as walking, running, and jumping. Abnormal posture and misalignment cause us to lose the ability to adapt to these outside forces, and also puts strain on our spinal cord and nerves.

The spine and nervous system

Pairs of nerves exit your spine between each pair of vertebrae. These nerves travel to every organ, cell, and tissue in the body, sending information to and from the brain. The brain must have proper communication with all of these tissues in order to coordinate our normal functions and adapt to outside stresses. Interference with these vital communication channels can cause dysfunction of any body system that the nerves go to, including our circulatory, digestive, endocrine, immune, musculoskeletal, respiratory, and reproductive systems. This is why it is so vital to maintain the health of our amazing spine.

The stresses of life often cause our spine to break down over time. The most noticeable effect of this is often pain. However, it is important to realize that by the time we begin to experience pain, there may already be interference with the vital function of the nervous system. Pain can have dramatic effects on our quality of life; however, it is important to recognize that pain is the body’s way of directing us to seek the help and make the changes in our life to correct the underlying cause.
