in Introduction

Celebrate health and wellness by joining a new Mayor’s office initiative promoting nutrition, exercise, and stress reduction. Fit City Kennesaw is a community wide program designed to encourage and empower participants to combat obesity and inactivity and improve their quality of life. This program will offer fit-friendly events throughout the year including six 5K road races along with other events promoting an active lifestyle.

Fit City Kennesaw will be launched by a kick-off event on Saturday, February 4, 10 am – 2 pm at the Ben Robertson Community Center on Watts Drive. Baseline health screenings including cholesterol, weight, blood pressure and BMI will be offered to Kennesaw residents for free; a $20 fee will be charged to non-residents. Nutritional counseling and assistance with goal setting will also be available. Throughout the day, speakers who successfully changed their lifestyles through exercise and diet will provide testimonials.

Fit City participants will have access to a website offering the option to track their progress on weight, nutrition and exercise. The program will also feature a Facebook page, encouraging participants to share their stories of success or challenge.

“Kennesaw is the perfect community for this initiative,” according to Dr. Cris Eaton-Welsh, a health care professional as well as a City Council member. “Our city has a first rate system of parks, green spaces and trails. For years, our award-winning Parks & Recreation Department has been offering many classes, programs, and organized sports activities. It makes sense to combine our facilities and programs with a targeted focus on active living. Our goal is to have Kennesaw be recognized as the fittest community in Cobb County.”

Fit City Kennesaw is a collaboration between the City of Kennesaw and a group of local healthcare providers. Other sponsors include MopDog Creative and Strategy, Big Peach Running Company and the Atlanta Track Club.
